Jasmine Paolini: I'm so emotional right now

French Open live updates (38)

Speaking after the match on Court Philippe-Chatrier, semifinal winner Jasmine Paolini said: "I'm more happy (than relieved) for sure! Thank you very much, merci beaucoup. It was a tough match. She's playing unbelievable for 17 years old, she's so complete.

"I lost against her one month ago (in Madrid), so I thought 'you have to do better'. Ball after ball I was more relaxed, even though on this stage it's hard to be relaxed, and I'm really happy I managed to win in the end.

"I had in my mind, it was painful in Madrid. I wanted to step on court and do better, just to hit the ball (well) and enjoy, and it worked so I'm happy. I learned (to dream big) later than other players, maybe, but it's the most important thing in sport and in life.

"I'm happy I could dream this moment. I don't know what to say, I'm so emotional! Grazie mille, ragazzi, and merci beaucoup!"

Three languages in that final sentence!

Jasmine Paolini wins it!

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 6-1 Mirra Andreeva

A word for Jasmine Paolini. The temptation has been to focus on the weaknesses in Mirra Andreeva's game, given the teenager's evident strengths and clear potential.

But the gutsy little Italian, the 12th seed, has been so consistent and unflappable under pressure. She's always responded when she's needed to. 0-30 up and she's won 15 of the last 20 points!

Paolini comes to the net, and swats away a confident open forehand into the corner. Winner, and three match points. She comes to the net, and volleys it away!

Jasmine Paolini into the final against Iga Swiatek, and she's beaming with delight, and how well deserved.

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 5-1 Mirra Andreeva*

Andreeva with a nicely constructed point, 0-15 up on Paolini's serve and the first step in a long road back to parity after the double break.

Murmurs of support from around the Chatrier crowd for the underdog.

She pulls one wide, but Paolini nets. Oh, brilliant serve from Paolini, ace, 30-all. But the Italian goes long again, break point Andreeva! 'You can do this, come on!' shouts from the Russian's box as she turns away from Paolini to compose herself.

Brilliant comeback from Paolini. A superb drop shot, Andreeva does really well to make it, but a dismissive angled volley cross-court for the winner takes us to deuce.

Andreeva nets and bends from the hip to chastise herself. Another loose forehand, long, Paolini watches it out. One game from the match...

Paolini breaks again!

*Jasmine Paolini 6-3 4-1 Mirra Andreeva

Andreeva waggles her hand in front of her face, as if trying to release her frustration through the movement. It feels like she's very off-the-cuff at the moment, whereas Paolini is a bit more methodical and precise.

Of course, instinct is important, but Andreeva is a little loose and chaotic at times in her playing style. But that's nice - a drop shot then a volley away to the right for 15-all.

Paolini, relentlessly probing if not an unstoppable juggernaut, puts Andreeva off-balance with a nice cross-court forehand. And the teenager goes long with an eminently makeable shot. Poor mistake, really. Two points for a double break... Paolini only needs one.

A mish*t backhand goes long and Andreeva looks distraught on her chair. She breathes heavily to try to calm herself down, and blinks what looks like the hint of tears in her eyes.

Paolini moving on up

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 3-1 Mirra Andreeva*

The atmosphere is pretty inhibited inside Chatrier, not much ebb and flow to the noise, unlike Gauff vs Swiatek earlier today. Maybe because Paolini looks to be rolling smoothly towards a straight-sets win.

An hour gone in this match, and 30-30 on Paolini's serve after a nicely constructed point from Andreeva. But she goes needlessly long after a body serve. Maybe, like Gauff against Swiatek, a little overeager to exert her power game on her opponent.

Andreeva gives her another cheap point as she pulls a backhand wide.

Andreeva struggling on the big stage?

For all the 17-year-old's evident power and potential, Mirra Andreeva is still playing in her first ever Tour-level semifinal, let alone her first Grand Slam semifinal.

Is she struggling a little with the pressure and expectation in the rarefied air of a Grand Slam last four here?

It looks a bit like it.

Early break from Paolini

*Jasmine Paolini 6-3 2-1 Mirra Andreeva

Paolini goes 0-15 up on the Russian's serve, Andreeva's box dispenses some unwanted advice, and the 17-year-old glares at her box and shouts 'I'm fine!', I think.

But her backhand has deserted her, another error, and she's 0-30... oh dear. Double fault. 0-40.

Paolini has barely touched the ball in this game and she has three break points! The Court Philippe-Chatrier crowd claps slowly and rhythmically to try to gee up the teenager.

15-40, one saved. Poor drop shot from Andreeva, Paolini tries to sneak it up the line but a nice angled volley gets past the Italian, two saved! Ah, another poor backhand from Andreeva, and what looked like a winner hits the top of the net.

A wobble from Paolini? But a hold

French Open live updates (69)

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 1-1 Mirra Andreeva*

Paolini, 15-0 up, comes forward but nets as she looked to go forward and gestures in that classic Italian way to register her annoyance. Another missed forehand, 15-30 and she sort of shrugs and puts her arms up as if questioning her box.

That's more like it! She pushes Andreeva into a corner and jabs a cross-court forehand away for 30-all. Eight winners apiece so far in this match.

The Russian nets her serve return, 40-30, and now she is the one showing her frustration. Andreeva goes long and it's a good game for Paolini to hold.

Strong re-start from Andreeva

*Jasmine Paolini 6-3 0-1 Mirra Andreeva

That loo break seemed to work wonder for Andreeva, who seems to have a renewed focus.

40-15 up, there's a modicum of pressure, but a brilliant shot down the line gives her the game.

Paolini forced to wait

The Italian 12th seed is sitting quietly as she waits for Mirra Andreeva to get back on court. Some gamesmanship, perhaps, from the Russian?

A reminder, Andreeva made 17 unforced errors in that first set, dwarfing Paolini's total, and took none of her five break point opportunities.

She will need to be more clinical and more accurate in the second set to get back into it.

Paolini for the set... taken!

Jasmine Paolini 6-3 Mirra Andreeva*

Positive opening point from Paolini. That must settle the nerves at the start of a crucial game. Andreeva goes narrowly wide and that's 30-0. Two points from the set.

But a powerful inside-out forehand from Andreeva forces the Italian to net. 'Faster legs', Paolini's box advise her. Andreeva has a bit of momentum but nets and throws her arms up frustratedly to her box.

And Paolini takes the first set! 6-3. Andreeva goes off for a bathroom break to try to reset.

Strong stuff from the teenager

*Jasmine Paolini 5-3 Mirra Andreeva

Andreeva serving with new balls and must hold to stay in the set. Good start to the game as she pings it down the line with the backhand for 15-0, but nets to bring Paolini level.

More level-pegging, then Paolini goes long. 40-30. Andreeva has won 67% of first-serve points to Paolini's 64%, by the way.

Game point Andreeva. Paolini isn't happy and wants it checked, but the call stands. Paolini to serve for the set.

Jasmine Paolini 5-2 Mirra Andreeva*

Clever from Paolini. She's such a good tactician on court. A lovely drop shot brings Andreeva in close, a couple of quick shots exchanged at the net, and she lobs Andreeva, who can't keep in her desperate backhand attempt.

Nice cross-court backhand, 30-0, Andreeva nets the serve, 40-0. Nice shot from Andreeva, though, an angled cross-court forehand winner that put Paolini off balance. Some real juice behind that shot.

Paolini nets, then goes long, and Andreeva has held her nerve really well. From 40-0 down to deuce and Paolini is frustrated, wiping her face with her towel in an attempt to reset.

What a comeback from Andreeva! She drops it right on the baseline, and booms a backhand to the left corner. Lovely winner, advantage, but then long, deuce. Paolini nets, but we're back at deuce after a wonderful drop shot.

Shouts of 'Come on!' from Paolini as Andreeva makes an unforced error on the backhand, getting into the shot slightly late. Long, just, deuce No 4. Wow, super forehand down the line from Paolini, advantage... taken!

Andreeva holds with a big ace

*Jasmine Paolini 4-2 Mirra Andreeva

Slight mish*t from Andreeva, slightly low bounce, but she's probably earned that luck as it slides under Paolini's racket. Nice drop shot attempt to switch things up, netted, 30-15.

That's 12 unforced errors so far to Paolini's four. Just as I say that! Paolini reached another drop shot, waited for Andreeva to commit, and had the whole court to aim at... but dragged it wide. Waste.

40-15 to the Russian. But Paolini puts that one away! Confident play from the Italian, smashing a volley home for 40-30, and Andreeva nets needlessly for deuce. If Paolini breaks again now the set is surely hers...

But a brilliant 147km/h ace gives Andreeva the game!
